Switzerland is a small country in size (only 41.000 km2) and has four official languages: German (74%), French (20%), Italian (4%) and Flemish (1%). The Universities of Basle, Bern, Saint-Gallen and Zurich, and Haute Universitaire de Lucerne situated in German-speaking area of Switzerland, where the language in which courses are conducted is German. Universities such as Geneva, Lausanne and Fribourg are the French region of Switzerland and therefore the main language of instruction is French. And finally, the Italian-speaking region of the country has its own proposed University, L'Universita della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano.
